… Staying in an industry as volatile as journalism, let alone fashion journalism, is a story altogether that often goes unaddressed. Your mother should have told you that before you delve into unfamiliar territory, ‘dip your foot into the water and test out the temperature.’ Well, that’s what I’m here for. Although your personal experience is bar-none a better reference than my own, mine is a start. Just know that you must be obsessed about your craft. Here are four things to keep in mind:
1. You start out with a salary equivalent to that of your high school janitors’ — and the pay does improve dramatically once you make editor.
2. You – in most instances — work overtime without pay.
3. Few paying positions are available — considering you have to wait until someone gets fired, leaves or dies.
4. More often than not, you will not end up at the publication of your dreams.
It’s not as glamourous as it’s made out to be, but call me crazy — I still love it.
