Spirits are Still High at Hearst With $1 Billion in Savings

MitchScherzerMitchell Scherzer

You can learn from Hearst. According to the New York Post, the publishing house for Marie Claire, Esquire and Popular Mechanics, stowed away $1 billion for emergency purposes.

Being that we’re hearing about it now, Hearst has utilized its savings, investing in its new CFO – former Goldman Sachs investment banker and Managing Director of The Silverfern Group – Mitchell Scherzer, who replaces Ronald Doerfler. Luckily the subjugated CFO will retain a job as senior VP of finance and administration.

With the grim outlook of the publishing industry, I’d say that Hearst CEO Frank Bennack, made the all the right moves. Add to that, the debt-free Hearst has $7 billion in revenue (despite the slump in profits this year).

Esquire: Rejected

Sigh… I guess I won’t be joining Esquire this fall. The editor told me that he thought, “long and hard” before deciding that I should go back to school. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but I did get recommended to apply for the print editorial internship as well – I got the contact info for that internship – so at least I’m not feeling as down. Now I need to find an apartment before I return to school.

Event: Sode Collections @ Metropolitan Hotel

I’ll be away for the day as I’ve been invited to peruse Southern designer’s collections at the Metroplitan Hotel in NYC. Rumor has it that a certain Gossip Girl is going to be stopping by. I’ll take pictures and post them up for viewing later later tonight (hopefully). Oh, and it looks like my editor wants me to freelance for a little $$. I still haven’t heard back from Esquire (it’s been a week) and I’ve sent a follow up email not too long ago. I don’t have a good feeling about this, but oh well. I can always go back to school. It’s a good idea to keep in contact with your editors and do a good job for obvious reasons, but I’ll get into that later. I will try to have content from today’s event ASAP, and of course I’ll try to snap a few celebrity candids.

Advice: Don’t Save Resume as .docx

worddocxLong story short, I had sent my resume in as .docx and the Esquire editor interviewing me informed me that he was unable to read resumes in the .docx format. Thankfully my writing clips alone garnered me that interview.

Esquire: Crossing My Fingers

I just sent out my references and my pitch to Esquire’s editorial internship position. All I can do now is wait (and pray). Wish me luck!

Interview: Esquire

Ah, the dreaded interview day. You stand in front of your mirror, deliberating what dress to pair with what stilettos or, for the guys, whether the mocha oxford should be paired with dark jeans and your favorite blue dress shirt. Despite four interviews to my credit, I’m stuck in that in that dilemma. Worse yet, I don’t even have a ride to the LIRR. Le sigh… Before I forget, here is a piece of advice, don’t forget to print out your resume. Wish me luck!
